8 And thus God breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death; giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men–
9 Having ascended into heaven, having the bowels of mercy; being filled with compassion towards the children of men; standing betwixt them and justice; having broken the bands of death, taken upon himself their iniquity and their transgressions, having redeemed them, and satisfied the demands of justice.
19 For were it not for the redemption which he hath made for his people, which was prepared from the foundation of the world, I say unto you, were it not for this, all mankind must have perished.
One phrase in these verses stands out to me. “Standing betwixt them and justice.”
So often today we hear the cry, “We deserve this or that thing,” as if we have earned it by our merit. We deserve that vacation. We deserve that raise. We deserve that entitlement. We deserve ….
I’m so eternally grateful we don’t get “what we deserve.” If we did, we would be doomed. Our natural man tendencies and sins mean we “deserve” to be separated from the Spirit in this life and our Father and His Son eternally. That’s justice for our actions.
Instead, we have a loving Savior who stands between us and justice. He’s paid the price, carries the burdens, and overcomes the obstacles that keep us from getting what we deserve.
So whenever we feel like we’re entitled to anything, remember that we don’t have to get what we deserve. Instead, we are blessed abundantly, even in trials and situations we don’t understand, because we have a Savior who gives us infinitely more than we deserve.
