…Nephi was more faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord—therefore he was favored of the Lord, for the Lord heard his prayers and answered them, and he took the lead of their journey in the wilderness.
Pondering a single phrase of scripture this morning. Sometimes I geek out on grammar and sentence structure. 🤓 But I think in this case, it makes a difference in our perspective and understanding.
Who is the last “he” in this verse referring to? It could be Nephi. Because Nephi was faithful to the Lord, he was blessed to be the leader of his family in their journey in the wilderness. His righteousness qualified him for the responsibility. Structurally, that sentence construction works (I can still see my 6th grade teacher writing the sentence diagram on the board!).
However, it can also be that the Lord, in answer to their prayers, took the lead in their journey.
That’s how I’m choosing to read it this morning. When we are faithful in keeping the commandments, the Lord will hear and answer our prayers and take the lead in our journey too.
I am currently watching this blessing unfold in our lives. My husband recently started a new job. It’s been a long hard journey. And even looking forward, it doesn’t feel like smooth sailing. There will be some turbulent storms we have to work through. But like Nephi, we are trying to be faithful to His commandments. So I believe that He will take the lead in our journey as well and continue to be near as we travel the road before us.
