Leviticus 18:1–5

1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the Lord your God.

3 After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.

4 Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the Lord your God.

5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the Lord.

I’m a rule follower. I’m pretty sure I’ve been a rule follower my whole existence, long before this mortal journey. It’s why I like baking and hate cooking. Cooking has too much room for interpretation. ? Baking is exact.

That’s not to say I always follow the rules. I’m the worst at speeding. ? But when it comes to God’s laws, I try (not always successfully because—work in progress!) to keep them.

I love these verses about why we keep God’s laws. He doesn’t want us to suffer the sorrows associated with wickedness. He didn’t want the children of Israel to live like the Egyptians they just left. And He didn’t want them to live like the wicked people in Canaan where He was leading them.

He said, I have a better, holier way. But you have to leave the worldly ways alone.

We have the same admonition today. We have to leave the ways of the world alone. We have to choose God’s laws, His ordinances, His commandments. In them, and them alone, is life.
