Doctrine & Covenants 138:30

But behold, from among the righteous, he organized his forces and appointed messengers, clothed with power and authority, and commissioned them to go forth and carry the light of the gospel to them that were in darkness, even to all the spirits of men; and thus was the gospel preached to the dead.

It has become a habit to me to read this section each Saturday before Easter. It is fitting considering it’s the revelation about Christ visiting the spirit world between His death and Resurrection.

Those who had been faithful in life anxiously awaited Christ’s arrival. Once He came to liberate them, they were sent to preach the gospel to those who could not abide Christ’s presence or glory (even in that place). And look at the language. They were “clothed with power and authority” to carry light into the darkness.

The covering of the Atonement gave them the authority to bear His gospel to those who had not been covered. He makes us worthy. Through His great and last sacrifice, we not only receive redemption ourselves, but we can then take the message to others so they too can choose to be covered. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is far lasting through place and time. We must be covered to progress.
