Doctrine & Covenants 123:13–17

13 Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness …

14 These should then be attended to with great earnestness.

15 Let no man count them as small things; …

16 You know, brethren, that a very large ship is benefited very much by a very small helm in the time of a storm …

17 Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

Joseph knew hardship. He had witnessed it firsthand. He knew the evils of men and the world. He’d experienced them. He was not blind to struggle and fear and hopelessness.

But from the confinement of Liberty jail, after listing all that he and his people had suffered, he made this pronouncement.

We must bring light to a darkened world. Our efforts may seem small and inconsequential. But he reminds us that small movements alter the course of large ships. Hope is essential.

His charge still rings true. We do the things that we can do (and the efforts will probably feel small and unseen and useless) and then we stand still and trust in God. He will rescue and deliver and save.
