Alma 51:9

But behold, this was a critical time for such contentions to be among the people of Nephi; for behold, Amalickiah had again stirred up the hearts of the people of the Lamanites against the people of the Nephites, and he was gathering together soldiers from all parts of his land, and arming them, and preparing for war with all diligence…

So many levels of application for this verse.

1. When we are conflicted in our own beliefs and our own spirits, we let our guard down to the adversary who is always trying to penetrate and persuade.

2. When we have contention in our homes and families, we let our guard down to the adversary.

3. When we allow contention in our communities (whether it be our neighborhoods, our church family, or our social media interactions), we let our guard down to the adversary.

4. When we as a nation allow contention to be our main dialogue, we let our guard down to very real threats from our enemies.

The reality is that our true enemy, the adversary, is ready at every hand to take advantage of our souls, our families, our associations, our freedoms, and our very lives.

When we let contention rule our thoughts and actions, we are weaker and might not be able to withstand his blows. Our best and only security is to anchor to the Savior and His teachings.

Truth is truth. It will always be what it is. Our task then is to pray for humility to recognize, live, and teach the truth to ourselves and our loved ones. And let the contention go. It weakens us.

When we focus on living and embracing God’s truths (whatever they are) rather than being “right” through contentious rhetoric, we are stronger and able to withstand the attacks that threaten to destroy.
