… finding there was greater happiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers, …having been myself a follower of righteousness …
In this verse describing Abraham, these two ideas stand out.
1. He knew that the only way to happiness was God’s way–the blessings of the fathers (the covenants first made with Adam and carried on through his righteous posterity to Abraham).
2. He knew that in order to obtain those blessings, he had to be obedient and righteous.
There is ONE path to happiness and to God. That is by obedience and claiming the blessings of the covenant.
No matter where we are or what we are doing, we have to CHOOSE to obey.
We are not victims of our circumstances (Abraham was in some pretty bad circumstances) or powers pressing on us. We choose, every moment of every day, whether or not we will be obedient, righteous, and claim the blessings offered to us.
